Smartum Saldo can be used to pay for exercise, culture, lunch and even commutes

Accepting Smartum Saldo

Smartum Saldo is a payment instrument for exercise, culture and lunch services, which employers use to support their employees' well-being. You can start accepting Smartum Saldo payments by signing a contract with Smartum. Smartom Saldo is a tax-supported benefit, and it can only be used to pay for the beneficiary's personal purchase. If necessary, the service provider can check the user's identity.

The user can have four types of Smartum Saldo:

  • Liikuntasaldo - accepted at exercise venues

  • Liikunta- ja kulttuurisaldo - accepted at both exercise and cultural venues

  • Lounassaldo – accepted at restaurants

  • Työmatkasaldo - can be used to pay for commuter benefits at R-kioskis

Smartum Saldo can be used to pay for the entire transaction or a part of it, in which case the rest can be paid with a different payment instrument. No extra fees may be charged for payment with Smartum Saldo.

Liikunta- ja kulttuurisaldo

Smartum Liikunta- ja kulttuurisaldo can be used in three different ways.

1. Card payment

The Smartum card is a smart Visa card. The cash register/payment terminal prints out a receipt, which is signed by the customer to confirm the purchase. This way the cashier is informed that the customer is paying with a Smartum card, and has the opportunity to check that the purchase is covered by the customer's tax exempt exercise and culture benefit. The signed receipt is compared to the signature on the card.

Payment verification

In order for a transaction to be completed successfully, Smartum must have the details of the payment terminal on record. Payments made with a Smartum card are always verified. If the verification request is not accepted, the card may not be accepted as payment. Reasons why verification may fail include:

  • the card balance is lower than the purchase sum
    • charge a lower sum
  • the customer's account only holds an exercise balance (cannot be used at cultural venues)
    • the transaction cannot be completed
  • the Smartum system does not recognise the payment terminal
    • please contact our customer services so we can add the payment terminal to our database.

Payment terminal transactions made using a Smartum card are paid out through your bank in the same way as normal card payments. Smartum charges a service fee for payment terminal payments retrospectively four times a year.

2. Smartum mobile payment

The customer creates a QR-code in their own Smartum online service, and shows the code from their smart phone or from a print-out. The code is read at the cashier as follows:

  1. Log in to your Smartum online service and input the number code to the appropriate field. The online service will guide you through the charging process.
  2. Some cash registers can be integrated to receive Smartum mobile payments (starting from 4/2016). In this instance the code will be read with a reader or the number code will be typed directly into the cash register. You can inquire about the integration from your cash register provider. If necessary you may ask for more information from Smartum customer service.

3. Online payment through the Smartum online service

If a service location does not offer the possibility to pay with a payment card, the customer can pay for the service as an online payment through their personal Smartum online service and present proof of the payment as a printed receipt or on the screen of a smartphone, for example. This option is convenient particularly for small operators.

Smartum settles both mobile and online payment transactions to the service provider within a few days. The minimum settlement limit is EUR 40. A service fee based on the current price list is deducted from the settlement.
